Inspirations for Living Room!
To us, living room is very important part of the house. Yes, a 5-room BTO isnt that big. So, we decided to forgo a study room in the living room. At first, I always feel that I should be doing my work in the living room, so as to ensure that I am not always cooped up in a room. But I think the life of a wife does not just revolves round work. I cannot simply come back from work, bathe and then continue with more work at home. So, to weigh between (1) bigger living room or (2) make an effort to pop in and out of bedroom 2 into the living room. I chose a more spacious living room. Below are some of the ideas we have in mind about our living room…
Recently, we were so torn between having tiles in the entire home or opting for a cheaper alternative – vinyl flooring. So, we end up doing more research about these two options. Vinyl flooring is available in the market in either sheet or tiles form. Probably the least expensive form of flooring, vinyl is quite popular among homeowners as it offers great value for money. They come in wide range of colors, styles and designs and are equally easy to install.
Pros of Vinyl Flooring:
- Vinyl flooring provides a slightly softer surface than options like tile or wood.
- Has plenty of colours and design. From far, they look really like a wood.
- Extremely durable, with most companies offering a lifetime warranty.
- Resistant to dirt and water, and it’s one of the few flooring types that can be installed directly over the subfloor/previous tiles. In short, it can be overlay.
- As far as cleaning and maintenance goes, vinyl is hard to beat. Requiring practically no maintenance after installation, vinyl needs to just be swept and mopped occasionally to keep the floor clean.
- Can easily remove a damage section and be replaced.
- Anti-slip…
Cons of Vinyl Flooring:
- There were some reviews that indicate that the house might smell after a few years. Especially when water sips through the vinyl flooring. I mean, what are the chances right? But then again, I think they will be instances where I (or any guests) might spill water on the floor.
- I can’t mop the way I normally mop. I will possibly need to rely on Magic Mop.
- May need to have carpets around the hall to ensure that if water spills, it spills on the carpet first?
Pros for Tiles:
- Tile flooring significantly increases a home’s resale value. The beauty and allure of tile flooring lasts a very long time when it is maintained properly.
- Easy to MOP and maintain…
- Singapore is fairly warm… tiles give a cooling sensation!
- Durable in the long run!
Cons for Tiles:
- More expensive but worth it in the long run!
- Tiles offers a cold and hard walking surface. Imagine is you were to fall and slip on a tile?
- You cant simply just change the faulty tile. You might need to change a few tiles at once.
- Glazed tiles, while easy to maintain, can prove to be slippery if they get wet.
- Tiles can withstand heavy foot traffic, they can be easily chipped or cracked if something heavy is dropped on them—and the repair is not that simple…
Well, I am sure there are more pros and cons in either tiles or vinyl. I guess we can slowly consider it again. One main deciding factor, will be cost. We do not wish to burst our budget just cos we want to have tiles in the entire house. Not forgetting, we want to overlay the tiles in the common toilet and master bedroom toilet too. The ID we consulted in asked “You guys really hate the one that HDB provided?”. Yes, the one HDB provided is too basic. Then again, we are still considering if we should overlay tiles above the current tiles that was provided by HDB. Another problem with overlaying – the ID was afraid that by overlaying, we might cause the toilet to be higher than the master bedroom level which will instantly cause the water to flow out of the toilet into the master bedroom. Hmm, too many things to consider huh? Not just that, we cannot HACK the tiles from the toilet. We can, but this means we will not be insured/covered by HDB in the event we have leaking in the future. Of course, we wouldn’t want to take that risk. All these are pending. We truly didnt know that home renovation can be pretty tiring! Decisions decisions decisions! Not forgetting when the ID asked – who lives in this huge unit? Just the two of you? Why do you need such a huge place? Errr, bro, have you heard about family planning? Of course, Irman and myself buy a place to set up a family in the future. Haha. I was appalled by his qns actually. Oh wells!

I have never really decorated with blue in my own home, but certain shades do captivate me, and when I saw these chairs I was smitten. Having a pair next to each other is always a great look for a living room, especially across from the sofa.
